Majestic top predators. Terrifying human eaters. Enigmatic, misunderstood creatures. A few ways people may describe sharks – depending on how you view them. But no matter your view of them, it doesn’t change the fact that they are essential to the natural order of marine ecosystems, and they are in catastrophic trouble.
It’s no secret that naturalists and biologists have traditionally been perhaps a little overeager to separate nature into ever smaller categories and subspecies. The Dama gazelle failed to dodge that bullet, and the species is now critically endangered, with only about 100-200 mature individuals left in the wild.
